some people are just evil. umm, and i'm not talking about myself... my mom's car was broken into early this morning and her purse was stolen. my guess--identity theft. well... then there's the part where they tried pulling money out of the atm but was unable to as the account only had about $24 in it. HAHAHAHAHA! shows you, evil people! anyhow, i think my mom was mostly upset that she was only two stamps away from a free mocha. she was pretty bummed about that. knowing her, i bet she was also close to a free sandwich at subway too. :( and then let's not forget how disappointed she was that her card to get discounted money orders with that nice picture of her was in there too. evil people! what's up with that. you just caused my mom more stress than she needs. you will get it! that's right, i'll be waiting for you tonight--with my camera. yep, and we know how much you hate that flash in your face when it's dark...
on another note, my love has to close tonight. :(
latest teachings... don't mess with mom... the gods will get even... you will suffer. you will wish you were never born...

HORRORSCOPE
Are you afraid that people will no longer understand you, amy? Have you changed too much? Do you have the feeling that you've left some people you know behind? Yes, this is possible. But what can you do? Everyone can't change at the same pace as you. It may be that your friends have no problem with the changes you have undergone. Consider this possibility, amy!
ack. oh no, what's happened to me?

RAIDING THE RAIDING ANTS
ants, ants, and more ants. we were taken over by the little buggers. on satuday, wendy raided them, and yesterday when yael got back, she took everything out of the pantry and we cleaned it, then, put everything back in. so while i had the good intention of working on my paper all day, instead, we cleaned out our pantry and ridded our apartment of ants. so now we're all ant murderers. last night we went by wal-mart to pick up some more stuff to kill them all off, and got just a bit distracted and looked around at different things. on the way back, we stopped by the in-n-out and since there was a hecka long line at the drive thru, we went inside and i think it took twice as long as if we'd have gone through the drive thru. anyways, we came back home and played disney sorry! and had a good time, as wendy and i kept feeling bad for sending each other back to start. perhaps that's one of the reasons why yael won? anyways, i have some really great friends over here, who also happen to be my roommates. we have some good times together, yet i think we're all looking forward to going home for thanksgiving.

CARL G. JUNG
"I had always been impressed by the fact that there are a surprising number of individuals who never use their minds if they can avoid it, and an equal number who do use their minds, but in an amazingly stupid way. I was also surprised to find many intelligent and wide-awake people who lived (as far as one could make out) as if they had never learned to use their sense organs: They did not see the things before their eyes, hear the words sounding in their ears, or notice the things they touched or tasted. Some lived without being aware of the state of their own bodies" (48).

BRI'S PURSE PARTY
my roommate bri, had a purse party today at her house, and wendy and i were among some of her friends who were able to attend. i had wendy wake me up this morning at 9:30am. yes, i actually woke up before noon! anyways, she snuck into my room, pressed the button on my alarm, and snuck out before i had the chance to open my eyes. when i got up, it was freakin' cold. i went out to the living room wrapped in a blanket and whined to her about how cold i was... like she could've done something about it... anyways... on our way, we stopped by the safeway so wendy could pick up a prescription, and got distracted by free sample food--cheesecake and egg nog. :) anyways, on our way driving to sonoma, we got lost and had to call bri for directions to her house. we got there, and as she had her car parked in front of the house next door, we went to the wrong door. luckily nobody lives there, and when no one answered the door, we went next door to her house. she took us around sonoma and showed us around. we ate sandwiches from this cheese place at the park, saw the ducks (one was so cute--it had a leaf stuck to it's belly), some wild chickens, but no chucks (half chicken half duck), which was quite disappointing. we looked at the mission and the slaves barracks and then she drove us around showing us around the town before going back to her place. we got ready for the party, which started around 4, and different girls came and went. no, i didn't buy anything. as i am not into purses, and they were quite expensive, it wasn't too difficult to refrain myself. however, i ate some food and had some hot apple cider. on our way home again, we got lost--again. but we eventually found our way back, and even though it's been really cold, i think we had a good day.
one more thing to note, i love bri's dog sadie. she did her tricks for us and when you point your finger at her and say bang, she falls over and puts her head down. it's so cute.
i enjoy spending time with my friends up here. it was fun having bri show us around her town and where she grew up. i also enjoy the times wendy and i are the only ones here and take our driving trips where we either take wrong turns or turn too soon and get lost. i know we will always eventually find our way, it is just a part of our adventures. i just wish i weren't so tired and cold...

SHABBAT SHALOM
tonight wendy and i made it to temple again. it started at 5:45, earlier than last week, was quite a bit shorter, and there was a band that played. however, while there were quite a few more people, there was no food this week, which disappointed both wendy and myself. i like the singing at temple. i just wish that i knew hebrew so i could sing along better. at least there's words...
on our way home, we were talking, and kinda got lost for a while... oh well, we had a grand time together...
stopped at panda express to pick up some chinese food, as there was no food at shabbat and we were quite hungry. my fortune said, "Panda Express celebrates 20 years of yummy." oh wait... it says, "Past inspirations and experiences will be helpful in your job"
latest teachings... shabbat shalom.

MY BLOG POLICY, NOW IN EFFECT
just so you know, i'm not jumping on the bandwagon and changing the whole look of my blog like everyone else is doing, merely because one person decided to change theirs. so i'm sorry to disappoint y'all and keep the same ol' boring look.
but wait... perhaps i should change both the look and the content. you know, to thoroughly annoy and disgust people so they never want to visit my site again (*note to self* publish all those things about people that everybody thinks, but no one tells them to their face). that might be some fun. i mean, if i do this, all i need to do afterwards is sit back and be entertained by you guys beating the crap outta each other. free entertainment. it's all good (*insert evil grin here*). i mean, i don't care if y'all hate me. you couldn't even come close to how much i can hate myself.
no, but really, i'm thinking about just taking the whole thing down and scrapping it and starting all over with whatever comes to my mind, which means i would only give the address to a certain select few (i'm thinking of my fan M who was really impressed with my site), and posting without publishing all that mean ass shit about everyone else merely for my personal pleasure of reading it in the privacy of my apartment... of course maybe sharing it with wendy and yael to get a good laugh... cause according to wendy, i'm evil anyways... i might as well just share it with the world...

DISGUSTED
one person does it, we all do it. that's the theme of our lives, huh? you know, it must be cause i've just gotta fit in. can't go around being different. i mean, what're people going to think about me if i'm not doing what everyone else is doing? i can't be myself. that's bad. but wait, maybe it's just that i can't think for myself. nope, gotta have someone else think for me. please tell me what to do. tell me what to think. i don't have a working brain anywhere in my body, especially my head. i am lost without society shaping me into a person. i mean, god knows i can't do it myself. that would just be horrible. can't even think of such things. maybe cause i can't even think.
i don't know what to do. so i keep changing my mind. today i'll do one thing, and tomorrow i'll do something else. now, i can't really make up my mind. that involves making a decision and sticking to it. i can't do that. i wanna do something big. wait. i can't do that. it's too hard. i'll do this. but wait. that's too hard too. so i'll just do this dinky little thing here. yeah. that's it. that's what i want to do.
this must be the way the system works. but now you're sitting there thinking, i'll just change. i can do that. well here's your little piece of enlightenment. it is something that cannot be changed. change, that's bad. we fear change. so don't go and change now. you might not be able to function. but oh wait, you're not functioning anyhows.
I'M BEING WEIRDED OUT. YOU PEOPLE DISGUST ME!

OH NO, A PROFESSOR THAT MAKES US THINK!
what is there to say about a professor who actually forces his students to think? using the words of a fellow classmate, "he's a bitch!" this probably sums up what the majority of his students think. if ever there was a class i hated, it is his, yet it's also made me think much about california and some of the state's major problems.
so what is it about this class that i cannot stand? or perhaps it is the professor. and yet, to listen to him speak about california and california's views towards ethnic minorities; his passion about these topics makes one just listen. one thing is for sure, the class is not boring.
i've come to the following conclusion... if i could merely take the class and not have to also worry about a decent grade, i would be fine. if i knew that i would be free of worry that perhaps i will be called upon and either not have an answer, or not have the right answer, it would be okay. but don't i need classes like this that challenge me? don't i need classes that make me think? this one obviously does, and if i survive, it will be one of my greater educational accomplishments.
latest teachings... ssu is made up of 67% females and only has 1.5% african americans and 13% hispanics...
today there are more women than men that are going to college in the united states...

LETTER TO RENE'
greetings...
so.. i haven't heard from you in a while, so i'm assuming things are quite busy around there.
i really really really am ready for thanksgiving, and even more so, christmas. i don't really mind being up here, but i'm ready for classes to be over and have a nice rest from evil papers, ta's who are the devil, and i long to be in my nice enclosed environment surrounded by the people i love, umm.. one in particular i'm thinking of...
talked to amir last night. i've always enjoyed our conversations. even got to talk to setie for a bit. ;) i'm hoping i see them over thanksgiving weekend. amir says that natalie emailed him telling him that she's getting a tattoo and asking people what she should get. feeling left out, i thought i'd get my own tattoo... i mean, i've been wanting to get one on the back of my hand that says "ASSUMPTIONS" like your stamp, for a while now... dang, that reminds me of how much i miss your stamp...
well... kevin gave kelly his gift from us, and from what i heard, i guess he really liked it? of course he still has to both watch it with me and explain it to me, as i have no idea what it's about, i mean, other than time travel...
let me hear from you so i know that you're okay. even a quick "i'm okay" would be fine. i should've called you this morning, as i actually woke up and got up around 10am (not after 12:30, like i've been doing for about the past week after late long nights in front of my evil computer), but then i hopped in the shower and took a nice long hot shower, which i really needed, and then it was too late. :(
as ever,
amy

CAMPBELL EXAM STUDY GUIDE
-the world navel: this is "the symbol of the continuous creation: the mystery of the maintenance of the world through that continuous miracle of vivification which wells within all things." (p.41) It is the source of all existence, and both good and evil exist.
-the "monomyth": Campbell called the hero's journey the monomyth, mono meaning one, as it is the one myth that has shown up in different cultures all around the world. While there are different heroes who face different struggles, they all go through the same basic journey to find enlightenment.
-the three main stages of the hero's journey: The three main stages include departure, initiation, and return. Under departure, there is the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, crossing of the first threshold, and the belly of the whale. The parts that fall under initiation are the road of trials, the meeting with the goddess, woman as temptress, atonement with the father, and finally, the ultimate boon. Lastly, is the return of the hero.
-call to adventure: The hero ventures from the every day world into the unknown. There is a herald, who is often ugly, loathsome, terrifying, or a beast. This often represents something we do not want to look at. The call signifies that destiny has called the hero for some kind of death and rebirth.
-refusal of the call: Refusal of the call converts the adventure into its negative. Thus the hero becomes trapped by boredom, hard work, or "culture" and loses power in the affirmative action. Life becomes meaningless.
-supernatural aids: The supernatural aid is a protective figure, often a little old crone or a wise old man. The supernatural aid represents the benign protecting power of destiny, and we follow this guide "to the peril of all our rational ends."
-threshold guardian: There is often a guardian at the first threshold, such as the lions outside public buildings. Their purpose is to warn off those not yet ready for the journey. They are protective yet terrifying and must be passed by if the adventure is to continue.
-belly of the whale: This refers to the worldwide womb image of being swallowed by a whale, such as in the stories of jonah and pinnochio. The journey is down into the darkness, and in a kind of self-annihilation, the hero must go inward to be born again.
-road of trials: After passing the threshold, the hero must pass a succession of trials, a world literature of miraculous tests and ordeals. The hero is aided by advice, amulets, and helpers and is supported by unseen powers. Symbolically, it is the journey into the unconscious.
-meeting the goddess: It becomes the ultimate adventure when the barriers and ogres have been overcome represented by "the mystical marriage of the triumphant hero-soul with the Queen Goddess of the world."
-hermaphroditic gods: These are gods that are both male and female. They symbolize coming together.
-search for a boon: A boon is a blessing, benefit, or gift. It is scaled to the stature of the hero, but too often, the hero wishes for something material or trivial rather than perfect illumination.
-apotheosis: this refers to the act of making a god of a person--deification.
-the hero's return: Sometimes the hero blisses out and refuses the return. The challenge of the return is to bring back the boon to the world and the contents of the unconscious or the spiritual insight for the benefit of others. Ideally, the hero returns as the master of two worlds, the inner and the outer, the spiritual and material, and the temporal and eternal.
-myth vs. dreams: "Dream is the personalized myth, myth is the depersonalized dream; both myth and dream are symbolic in the same general way of the dynamics of the psyche. But in the dream the forms are quirked by the peculiar troubles of the dreamer, whereas in myth the problems and solutions shown are directly valid for all mankind." (p.19)
QUOTES:
"It has always been the prime function of mythology and rite to supply the symbols that carry human spirit forward, in counteraction to those other constant human fantasies that tend to tie it back." (p.3)
"The tribal ceremonies of birth, initiation, marriage, burial, installation, and so forth, serve to translate the individual's life-crises and life-deeds into classic, impersonal forms. They disclose him to himself, not as this personality or that, but as the warrior, the bride, the widow, the priest, the chieftain; at the same time rehearsing for the rest of the community the old lesson of the archetypal stages. All participate in the ceremonial according to rank and function. The whole society becomes visible to itself as an imperishable living unit. Generations of individuals pass, like anonymous cells from a living body; but the sustaining, timeless form remains." (p.383 summarizing what the book is about, describing the roles and patterns that repeat themselves)
"Whereas the man or woman who can honestly say that he or she has lived the role--whether that of priest, harlot, queen, or slave--is something in the full sense of the verb to be." (p.383-384)
Prologue: Myth and Dream
"It would not be too much to say that myth is the secret opening through which the inexhaustible energies of the cosmos pour into human cultural manifestation. Religions, philosophies, arts, the social forms of primitive and historic man, prime discoveries in science and technology, the very dreams that blister sleep, boil up from the basic, magic ring of myth." (p.3)
"Dream is the personalized myth, myth is the depersonalized dream; both myth and dream are symbolic in the same general way of the dynamics of the psyche. But in the dream the forms are quirked by the peculiar troubles of the dreamer, whereas in myth the problems and solutions shown are directly valid for all mankind." (p.19 relationship of myth and dream)
"For the symbols of mythology are not manufactured; they cannot be ordered, invented, or permanently suppressed. They are spontaneous productions of the psyche, and each bears within it, undamaged, the germ power of its source." (p.4 myth is the spontaneous product of the collective unconscious)
"In a word: the first work of the hero is to retreat from the world scene of secondary effects to those causal zones of the psyche where the difficulties really reside, and there to clarify the difficulties, eradicate them in his own case (i.e., give battle to the nursery demons of his local culture) and break through to the undistorted, direct experience and assimilation of what C. G. Jung has called "the archetypal images."" (p.17-18 this stuff we call reality is secondary stuff, the real stuff is inside in the unconscious; reality-collective dream that we all share; senses-are not windows, but filters, we do not have the processing to process it all, protecting us from madness, if we were to take in all the reality, it would be too much)
"The hero, therefore, is the man or woman who has been able to battle past his personal and local historical limitations to the generally valid, normally human forms. Such a one's visions, ideas, and inspirations come pristine from the primary springs of human life and thought." (p.19-20)
3 Main Stages: Separation, Initiation, Return
"A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man." (p.30)
"Typically, the hero of the fairy tale achieves a domestic, microscopic triumph, and the hero of myth a world-historical, macroscopic triumph. Whereas the former--the youngest or despised child who becomes the master of extraordinary powers--prevails over his personal oppressors, the latter brings back from his adventure the means for the regeneration of his society as a whole." (p.37 difference between fairy tales and myths)
"...for the hero as the incarnation of God is himself the navel of the world, the umbilical point through which the energies of eternity break into time. Thus the World Navel is the symbol of the continuous creation: the mystery of the maintenance of the world through that continuous miracle of vivification which wells within all things." (p.41 the world navel)
Part 1: Departure
"The herald or announcer of the adventure, therefore, is often dark, loathly, or terrifying, judged evil by the world; yet if one could follow, the way would be opened through the walls of day into the dark where the jewels glow. Or the herald is a beast (as in the fairy tale), representative of the repressed instinctual fecundity within ourselves, or again a veiled mysterious figure--the unknown." (p.53 the call)
"Refusal of the summons converts the adventure into its negative. Walled in boredom, hard work, or "culture," the subject loses the power of significant affirmative action and becomes the victim to be saved. His flowering world becomes a wasteland of dry stones and his life feels meaningless..." (p.59 refusal of the call)
"For those who have not refused the call, the first encounter of the hero-journey is with a protective figure (often a little old crone or old man) who provides the adventurer with amulets against the dragon forces he is about to pass." (p.69 supernatural aid)
"What such a figure represents is the benign, protecting power of destiny. The fantasy is a reassurance--a promise that the peace of Paradise, which was known first within the mother womb, is not to be lost; that it supports the present and stands in the future as well as in the past (is omega as well as alpha); that though omnipotence may seem to be endangered by the threshold passages and life awakenings, protective power is always and ever present within the sanctuary of the heart and even immanent within, or just behind, the unfamiliar features of the world. One has only to know and trust, and the ageless guardians will appear. Having responded to his own call, and continuing to follow courageously as the consequences unfold, the hero finds all the forces of the unconscious at his side...Protective and dangerous, motherly and fatherly at the same time, this supernatural principle of guardianship and direction unites in itself all the ambiguities of the unconscious--thus signifying the support of our conscious personality by that order, larger system, but also the inscrutability of the guide that we are following, to the peril of all our rational ends." (p.71-73 we are being guided by the unconscious, there is something supporting us)
Crossing of the First Threshold
"The idea that the passage of the magical threshold is a transit into a sphere of rebirth is symbolized in the worldwide womb image of the belly of the whale." (p.90 belly of the whale)
"The hero, instead of conquering or conciliating the power of the threshold, is swallowed into the unknown, and would appear to have died." (p.90 death and rebirth)
Part 2: Initiation
"Once having traversed the threshold, the hero moves in a dream landscape of curiously fluid, ambiguous forms, where he must survive a succession of trials. This is a favorite phase of the myth-adventure. It has produced a world literature of miraculous tests and ordeals." (p. 97 road of trials)
"The hero is covertly aided by the advice, amulets, and secret agents of the supernatural helper whom he met before his entrance into this region. Or it may be that he here discovers for the first time that there is a benign power everywhere supporting him in his superhuman passage." (p.97 symbolically, journey into unconscious)
"There can be no question: the psychological dangers through which earlier generations were guided by the symbols and spiritual exercises of their mythological and religious inheritance, we today (in so far as we are unbelievers, or, if believers, in so far as our inherited beliefs fail to represent the real problems of contemporary life) must face alone, or, at best, with only tentative, impromptu, and not often very effective guidance. This is our problem as modern, "enlightened" individuals, for whom all gods and devils have been rationalized out of existence." (p.104 we don't grow up in primative environments)
"The hero, whether god or goddess, man or woman, the figure in a myth or the dreamer of a dream, discovers and assimilates his opposite (his own unsuspected self) either by swallowing it or by being swallowed. One by one the resistances are broken. He must put aside his pride, his virtue, beauty, and life, and bow or submit to the absolutely intolerable. Then he finds that he and his opposite are not differing species, but one flesh." (p.108)
"The ultimate adventure, when all the barriers and ogres have been overcome, is commonly represented as a mystical marriage of the triumphant hero-soul with the Queen Goddess of the World." (p.109 meeting with the goddess)
-good mother/bad mother
"Woman, in the picture language of mythology, represents the totality of what can be known. The hero is the one who comes to know. As he progresses in the slow initiation which is life, the form of the goddess undergoes for him a series of transfigurations: she can never be greater than himself, though she can always promise more than he is yet capable of comprehending. She lures, she guides, she bids him burst his fetters. And if he can match her import, the two, the knower and the known, will be released from every limitation. Woman is the guide to the sublime acme of sensuous adventure." (p.116 positive aspect of woman)
Woman as Temptress
Atonement with the Father: At-one-ment
"The problem of the hero going to meet the father is to open his soul beyond terror to such a degree that he will be ripe to understand how the sickening and insane tragedies of this vast and ruthless cosmos are completely validated in the majesty of Being. The hero transcends life with its peculiar blind spot and for a moment rises to a glimpse of the source. He beholds the face of the father, understands--and the two are atoned." (p.147 atonement with the father)
"The paradox of creation, the coming of the forms of time out of eternity, is the germinal secret of the father. It can never be quite explained." (p.147)
Apothesis - the act of making a god of a person (deification)
"Like the Buddha himself, this godlike being is a pattern of the divine state to which the human hero attains who has gone beyond the last terrors of ignorance." (p.150-151)
"They emerge always with a certain mystery; for they conduct the mind beyond objective experience into a symbolic realm where duality is left behind." (p.152 hermaphroditic gods (male/female), bisexual gods-coming together)
"The boon bestowed on the worshiper is always scaled to his stature and to the nature of his dominant desire: the boon is simply a symbol of life energy stepped down to the requirements of a certain specific case. The irony, of course, lies in the fact that, whereas the hero who has won the favor of the god may beg for the boon of perfect illumination, what he generally seeks are longer years to live, weapons with which to slay his neighbor, or the health of his child." (p.189 the ultimate boon boon=blessing, benefit, or gift)
Part 3: Return
"When the hero-quest has been accomplished, through penetration to the source, or through the grace of some male or female, human or animal, personification, the adventurer still must return with his life-transmuting trophy. (p.193 refusal of return)
but sometimes the return is refused.
"If the hero in his triumph wins the blessing of the goddess or the god and is then explicitly commissioned to return to the world with some elixir for the restoration of society, the final stage of his adventure is supported by all the powers of his supernatural patron. On the other hand, if the trophy has been attained against the opposition of its guardian, or if the hero's wish to return to the world has been resented by the gods or demons, then the last stage of the mythological round becomes a lively, often comical, pursuit. This flight may be complicated by marvels of magical obstruction and evasion." (p.196-197 the magic flight)
"The hero may have to be brought back from his supernatural adventure by assistance from without. That is to say, the world may have to come and get him. For the bliss of the deep abode is not lightly abandoned in favor of the self-scattering of the wakened state." (p.207 rescue from without
"...he has yet to re-enter with his boon the long-forgotten atmosphere where men who are fractions imagine themselves to be complete. He has yet to confront society with his ego-shattering, life-redeeming elixir, and take the return blow of reasonable queries, hard resentment, and good people at a loss to comprehend." (p.216)
"The boon brought from the transcendent deep becomes quickly rationalized into nonentity, and the need becomes great for another hero to refresh the word." (p.218 crossing of the return threshold it fades and gets further and further way from the actual experience someone has)
"How communicate to people who insist on the exclusive evidence of their senses the message of the all-generating void? (p.218 challenge of bringing enlightenment)
"As dreams that were momentous by night may seem simply silly in the light of day, so the poet and the prophet can discover themselves playing the idiot before a jury of sober eyes." (p.218)
"But though we are refreshed and sustained by these nightly visits to the source-darkness, our lives are not reformed by them; we return, like Rip, with nothing to show for the experience but our whiskers." (p.220 "deep sleep")
"Master of 2 Worlds" - talent of the master in both inner and outer worlds
The Keys
"The mythological hero, setting forth from his commonday hut or castle, is lured, carried away, or else voluntarily proceeds, to the threshold of adventure. There he encounters a shadow presence that guards the passage. The hero may defeat or conciliate this power and go alive into the kingdom of the dark (brother-battle, dragon-battle; offering, charm), or be slain by the opponent and descend in death (dismemberment, crucifixion). Beyond the threshold, then, the hero journeys through a world of unfamiliar yet strangely intimate forces, some of which severely threaten him (tests), some of which give magical aid (helpers). When he arrives at the nadir of the mythological round, he undergoes a supreme ordeal and gains his reward. The triumph may be represented as the hero's sexual union with the goddess-mother of the world (sacred marriage), his recognition by the father-creator (father atonement), his own divinization (apotheosis), or again--if the powers have remained unfriendly to him--his theft of the boon he came to gain (bride-theft, fire-theft); intrinsically it is an expansion of consciousness and therewith of being (illumination, transfiguration, freedom). The final work is that of the return. If the powers have blessed the hero, he now sets forth under their protection (emissary); if not, he flees and is pursued (transformation flight, obstacle flight). At the return threshold the transcendental powers must remain behind; the hero re-emerges from the kingdom of dread (return, resurrection). The boon that he brings restores the world (elixir)." (p.245-246 recap, nadir=bottom)
"The changes rung on the simple scale of the monomyth defy description." (p.246 these elements are like bars on an xylophone, like with scales, you can play different songs)
"Wherever the poetry of myth is interpreted as biography, history, or science, it is killed. The living images become only remote facts of a distant time or sky. Furthermore, it is never difficult to demonstrate that as science and history mythology is absurd. When a civilization begins to reinterpret its mythology in this way, the life goes out of it, temples become museums, and the link between the two perspectives is dissolved. Such a blight has certainly descended on the Bible and on a great part of the Christian cult." (p.249)
"Mythological symbols, however, have to be followed through all their implications before they open out the full system of correspondences through which they represent, by analogy, the millennial adventure of the soul." (p.251)

SHABBAT
tonight we went to temple. yep, you heard me right, temple. but no, i haven't converted or anything. yael and wendy had been meaning to attend temple since the first of the semester, but didn't get around to going until tonight. bri wanted to go, and they invited me to go with them. it was quite a nice experience. the people were extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. i would like to go back some time. ;)
the temple that we went to was shomrei torah in santa rosa.
latest teachings... you know those little donor cards that you keep in your wallet? well they don't use those. you're supposed to share your wishes with your family...
song lyric/quote of the moment... this is the song that doesn't end, yes it goes on and on my friend, some people started singing it not knowing what it was, but they'll continue singing it forever just because... this is the song that doesn't end... yes it goes on and on my friend...

A DAY
class: watched a video (maya: lords of the jungle, an odyssey series film) on the "mysterious maya" and learned that "they were NOT mysterious" at all. dr. purser made it a point we all understand that there were "not spaceships! not spaceships! DAMN!" however, the film was about 20 years old, far outdated by today's standards.
pizza: pizza! pizza! ameci's after class... barely missed the special, even though my clock did not say it was 4pm yet... ramona and breanne ordered dominoes and i put in $5 for them to save me a few slices... and then i went with bri and wendy to little caesars for pizza and crazy bread on our way to a girl's house where bri is housesitting this weekend... we were originally going to spend the night, but didn't, so we just went over there for a few hours, ate, watched tv, and pet the cat...
papers: inundated with papers, papers, and more papers. it's getting to be the end of semester, when all the papers are beginning to be due... i have so much to do... i don't even know where to begin... so i've resorted to watching matrix trailers... lalalalala...
latest teachings... one more time so you're all clear on this one... "the maya were NOT mysterious!!!"
song lyric/quote of the moment... "i missed the last bus i'll take the next train i try but you see it's hard to explain..." --the strokes

CLASSROOM UPDATE
Anthropology 341: Emergence of Civilizations
my only class that meets twice a week. powerpoint presentation on lowland mesoamerica. concept sheets are due tomorrow and we have a map quiz next thursday. i have class tomorrow, but it's my last class of the week. so not only is it my first class of the week, but also my last. other than that, i just need to work on my comparative essay. ugh!
English 315: California Ethnic Literature
last night my group presented our presentation to the class. we talked about country-western as ethnic music in the central valley. after meeting monday night at 10pm and finally finishing up after 1am, we met for one last time tuesday night at 5:30pm before class to run through the presentation and to time it. class started at 7pm. we watched an online video presentation of greg sarris, then had a brief discussion. after break, we beat out two other groups planning to present and nervously got up to present our material. everything ran smoothly. the music tied in well, and as students sang along with the songs, the prof. was expressed his disappointment that we didn't play any more music. so all in all, i think we did an excellent job. we pulled it off. and we're the only group so far that's stayed within one minute of the time we were given to present. so this leaves me with a two-page posting on the class discussion page on the research i have found, and then this presentation is in my past. whoopie!!! now i gots to do me a response paper, send in a term paper proposal, and then work on the darn 8-10 page term paper. double triple ugh!!!
Psychology 322: Myth, Dream, and Symbol
yet another guest speaker. this time our speaker was gerry olson who presented a slide show on dolls. dolls are a form of figurative art. gerry has done "expressive arts with children" with her sister, where they have kids making dolls, using their imagination and creativeness.
next week we have an exam on the campbell book, so david went over some key points to look for in the book, mostly quotes from campbell. a study guide is now posted online.
the last hour of class, devoted to dream groups, my group spent discussing the matrix trilogy and talking about hash. odd that last week we talked about lsd. i guess that's what happens when we don't get a t.a. or david to join our dream group discussion. of course, last week we had a t.a., but we didn't discuss a dream cause only three of us were there...
hmm... is it no wonder that this is my favorite class?
Psychology 306: History of Modern Psychology
tonight's class began with a lecture on alice miller. a link to the online lecture notes can be found at the following link... Alice Miller.
after break, we came back and talked about karen horney. if you want to read up some about her, go ahead and link to the following site. Karen Horney.
our paper that was originally due next week is postponed till after thanksgiving break. the coolest thing about our papers in this class is that he doesn't like formal essays with an introduction, body, and thesis. he says that introductions and conclusions are a waste of his time. however, catchy leads and catchy endings are a good thing and we can use any style or format we wish, but if it's a formal paper, it must be interesting.
latest teachings... retroflection: doing to oneself, the impulse one wishes to do to another.
song lyric/quote of the moment...
No alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises please.

THE EPIC OF GILGAMESH
Gilgamesh, why dost thou run about this way?
The life that thou art seeking, thou wilt never find.
When the gods created man,
they put death upon mankind,
and held life in their own hands.
Fill thy belly, Gilgamesh;
day and night enjoy thyself;
prepare each day some pleasant occasion.
Day and night be frolicsome and gay;
let thy clothes be handsome,
thy head shampooed, thy body bathed.
Regard the little one who takes thy hand.
Let thy wife be happy against thy bosom.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT BIRTHDAYS.
yesterday was my dad's birthday. he's the big 5-0! happy birthday dad! my best...
birthdays. birthdays. birthdays. the thing i don't like about birthdays is that it's always somebody's birthday. yep, and either i miss it, or i don't know what to get them... i've resorted to giving people their gifts at odd times. forget when their birthday is, if i offer a gift, just accept it.
another problem i run into is worrying that i might buy something that someone already has. oh dear me! i can't do this. there's just something about the "perfect" gift.
on the other hand, some people are extremely easy to shop for. take my love for instance. everywhere we go, he points out things he wants. "i want that. i want that, too. no, wait, i want that!" i just make mental notes and remember what these items are. hint hint for those of you who don't do this... maybe you should start... plus there's the fact that i could scrape up a dead squirrel my roommate just ran over, stuff it in a bag and give it to him and he'd be happy as a clam and actually keep the darn smelly thing and love it just as much as if it were a "real" gift... again... hint hint to those of you who are extremely picky about getting only what you want.
let me just say this, it's my love's birthday this weekend, and i am totally looking forward to it, as it's on saturday and so i actually get to be with him on his birthday. we plan to make this "our" weekend, even though kelly's coming up so we can watch donnie darko, we're having dinner with my parents (mom and i are making him dinner ;)), my dad is coming down and wants to see me, and amir sounds sure of himself that we'll see each other... we'll just see what happens *insert evil grin here*. i'm thinking, maybe we'll just go into hiding...
by the way... my birthday is tomorrow. ;)
latest teachings... remember--it's the thought that counts...
song lyric/quote of the moment... ick. ick ick ick.

HALLOWEEN HAPPY
so... halloween was a little different this year. usually, i'm surrounded by people in costumes and hear talk of going trick or treating. there's the whole, halloween atmosphere. not that i've been trick or treating lately, and not that we ever got trick or treaters out at our house, except our neighbor's kids. the apartments around here have been decorated nicely, and ours is no exception.
however, today was rather bleak outside. not a day to be out and about. days like this are days i just want to stay inside in bed with a good book (not a horrible class reader), with hot cocoa, snuggling up next to my love and wasting the day away. instead, my time was spent wasted in front of this here screen, and i found myself longing for a nice day to go outside and get some fresh air.
started the day out quite late, after noon, and didn't get around to accomplishing anything. yael left before i woke up, and everyone else was out and about or with friends. wendy got home early from class and we went to blockbuster to rent a couple of movies. we rented scream and scary movie, both of which i had not previously seen. you might be thinking... but amy, you don't watch scary movies. i don't. but since wendy convinced me that i needed to see them and that they were funny more than scary, i gave in. on the way back home, we stopped at the subway and got sandwiches. boy do i miss my subway back at home. the guys at the one we went to weren't very nice and it didn't have that "family" customer friendly atmosphere that's in the subway back at home. plus, they didn't have that cute boy, like, the only white boy that works at subway, there. however, they have this after 5pm special where if you buy a footlong sandwich and a medium drink, you get another footlong for 99 cents. that's a cool deal. still... i'd rather have "that boy"... so... we came back and ate and watched scream. okay, so that was a scary movie. and gross. i was so scared, that even though i had to go to the bathroom, i didn't want to. wendy came to tell me something and i thought she snuck up on me and i screamed. yeah. me and scary things don't go well together at all. so... then bri and her boyfriend kevin got here after taking some kids trick or treating and wendy and i carved pumpkins. i made a jack skeleton head?, and wendy made a cat. don't worry. we took pictures. later we put on scary movie, which was funny more than anything else. bri and kevin just went to bed and i think wendy's getting ready too. don't know if i'll read some or what... i'll probably end up doing the or what... anyways, another holiday down, and then my love's birthday will be here soon...
